West Virginia

Due to its location in the Appalachian region of the United States, West Virginia is known for being the most southern of the northern states, the most northern of the southern states, and the most western of the eastern states. West Virginia lies completely within the Appalachian mountain range, giving it the nickname of the Mountain State. The state has a current population of 1.77 million and was originally part of Virginia before seceding and forming its own state. It was the only state to form by separating from a Confederate state.
